Who were the Gamman's?
The original owner, Nathaniel Gamman was born in 1848 in Lowertown; this was seven years before Bytown was incorporated as the City of Ottawa. His father, Thomas Gamman, had emigrated from England while his mother, Mary-Jane Close, had been born in Cumberland Township. So this family is one of the early inhabitants of Ottawa.
In 1873 Nathaniel married Mary Ann Mulligan and that same year they acquired the land upon which their house was to be built. When the house was built Cyr Ave. was called 3rd Ave. Nathaniel's twin brother, Thomas, had bought the adjacent lot at the same time but never built on it and today it serves as the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot.
Together they had a family of seven children in the home and raised five to adulthood. Gamman worked as a brick maker, janitor and a labourer. They lived in their home for 47 years, Nathaniel until his death in 1917 and Mary Ann until 1921 when she moved in with one of her daughters.
